Understanding Volusia County’s Wetland Ordinance and Permitting Process
Wetlands are essential to the ecosystem, providing numerous benefits such as water filtration, flood control, and habitat for wildlife. Volusia County recognizes this and has implemented the Wetland Ordinance to protect and preserve wetlands within its jurisdiction. The ordinance requires a wetland alteration permit for any proposed development that impacts county jurisdictional wetlands and their upland buffers.
It is important to note that wetland permits are handled differently depending on whether the proposed development is residential or non-residential. Therefore, it is essential to use the appropriate application for your project. It is also important to note that permitting with state and federal agencies may also be required.
In addition to the county’s resources, there are several other organizations involved in wetland protection and preservation. These include the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, St. Johns River Water Management District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Jacksonville District, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency – Office of Wetlands, Oceans and Watersheds.
Furthermore, the Wetland Delineation Criteria and Wetland Mitigation Criteria, provided by Chapter 62-340 F.A.C. and Chapter 62-345 F.A.C., respectively, outline the guidelines for wetland delineation and mitigation.
