Beaches, by their very nature, are constantly subject to erosion and storm surge, being slowly removed by the endless motion of waves. Rebuilding beaches, called “nourishment,” requires dredging sand from other locations and packing it along a shoreline until it resembles a wide expanse again. This is usually based on weighing the cost of beach nourishment against the benefits; not all beaches will be rebuilt, but the ones responsible for coastal tourism are guaranteed in order to save local economies. However, because the ocean will continue eroding the sand, the process needs to be repeated every 2 to 8 years.
Check out this amazing video we found showing the process of and the problems facing beach nourishment.
